KYIV -- Ukrainian authorities have banned the import of pork from Russia's Southern, Central, and Volga federal districts, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.
Ukraine's Committee for Veterinary Medicine today said that the ban takes effect immediately.
It said the measure is necessary because of information provided by the World Organization for Animal Health regarding outbreaks of swine fever in Russia's Volgograd, Saratov, and Voronezh oblasts.
Swine fever, or hog cholera, is a highly contagious disease of pigs and wild boar.
