Outgoing President Hamid Karzai:
"We showed ourselves to be a strong nation which knows what is best. Following the result of this election Afghanistan will, Inshallah, receive much prosperity and joy. I congratulate both candidates and their friends. I especially congratulate the Afghan nation and its children, who served today as police, army, and national security forces, and the media. I extended my condolences to those families that have been hurt in attacks and acts of terrorism today. The result of these elections will bring good to Afghanistan."

Kabul's Ariana TV and other media have quoted an unidentified official from the Independent Electoral Commission as saying that some media outlets violated the two-day silence period that barred campaigning ahead of today's vote.
The unnamed official, who spoke while the election was still going on, estimated the number of violators at around "15 to 18."
The official also said that media outlets had been advised not focus their election-day coverage on violence and terrorist activities, and to not create anxiety among the people. He said some outlets voluntarily agreed to abide by this, and that it had contributed to encouraging people to go out to vote.

Long Process Begins
Now that Afghans have cast their ballots they will be hoping for a fast and relatively clean result. The election, however, will not be officially settled until July 22. That is to make there is enough time to examine claims of electoral fraud and collect ballots from the remotest areas.
