BAKU -- Hundreds of people have demonstrated in Azerbaijan's capital to express solidarity with recent protests in the central town of Ismayilli.

Riot police clashed with peaceful protesters who tried to gather at the central Fountains Square.

Some 40 participants were detained, including prominent blogger Emin Milli, human rights defender Malahat Nasibova, and investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova.

Demonstrators continued their march in the nearby streets amid a heavy police presence.

The rally was organized by youth activists to protest the use of force against protesters in Ismayilli.

The town has been the scene of renewed protests, the latest having taken place on January 24.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the demonstration, and detained dozens of protesters.

They have been demanding the resignation of the local governor and the release of dozens of men who have been arrested during the rioting.
