Belarusian National Security Committee officials detained at least seven employees of the National Historical Archive on August 16, including the deputy director of science and department heads, for undisclosed reasons. This comes after the archive fired at least 15 employees in what appeared to be a politically motivated action. Belarus has seen a wave of dismissals since 2020, targeting those expressing political views and subscribing to Telegram channels that are banned by Belarusian authorities as “extremist.” A university in Novopolatsk in northern Belarus last month ousted seven academics who were allegedly linked to support for anti-government protests in 2020.
