MINSK -- The lawyer representing jailed Belarusian opposition presidential candidate Ales Mikhalevich says officers from the Committee for State Security (KGB) searched his office today, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.
Aleh Aheyeu told RFE/RL that the KGB officers presented a search warrant and demanded to see all documents related to his professional activities, including his work representing Mikhalevich during investigations.
Aheyeu said the officers gave no reason for the search. He said not disclosing why a search is being conducted is a violation of Belarusian law.
Mikhalevich and several other opposition presidential candidates along with hundreds of their supporters were arrested in Belarus on December 19-20 while protesting the results of the presidential election, which they say was rigged.
Incumbent President Alyaksandr Lukashenka was announced the runaway winner of the vote, which international election monitors said was flawed.
Three former presidential candidates -- Mikhalevich, Andrey Sannikau, and Mikalay Statkevich -- remain in custody. Another, Uladzimer Nyaklyaeu, is under house arrest. All have been charged with organizing mass unrest.
