MINSK -- Plainclothes police have arrested the chairman of the Independent Unions (REP) of Belarus at his home, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.
Henadz Fyadynich told his colleagues he was being questioned as a witness in the case of the mass demonstration held on Minsk's Independence Square on December 19.
Thousands of people gathered there to protest the results of the presidential election held earlier that day.
Opposition activists say the vote -- which officially reelected President Alyaksandr Lukashenka -- was fraudulent.
The REP website announced that Fyadynich was taken to the Minsk City Interior Ministry's preliminary investigation directorate.
On January 14, KGB officers searched the REP's Minsk offices and confiscated many of the union's documents, computers, mobile phones, and other items.
