A blast at an explosives plant in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region on August 31 has killed at least three people.

Authorities said the death toll is expected to rise as investigators search through debris for five missing employees of the Sverdlov Defense Plant in the city of Dzerzhinsk, about 350 kilometers east of Moscow.

At least two people were injured by the explosion at the plant, an industrial facility that produces explosives for Russia's Defense Ministry, the mining industry, and for oil and natural-gas operations.

Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said firefighters worked about three hours before they were able to extinguish a blaze caused by the explosion.

Based on reporting by RIA, Interfax, and TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
