Clashes Along Kyrgyz-Tajik Border

At least 30 people were reportedly injured in clashes between villagers along the Kyrgyz-Tajik border.

The violence broke out during the evening of May 7 when an argument between residents of the Kyrgyz village of Kok-Tash and Tajik exclave of Vorukh turned into a stone-throwing battle.

At least one automobile was set on fire.

Border guards and police from both countries fired into the air to disperse the crowd.

At about the same time, people reports identify as Tajik citizens burned down a store in the village of Zhaka-Oruk, some 30 kilometers from Kok-Tash.

The road that connects the two countries has been closed by residents of both sides of the border.

That section of the Osh-Isfara road has been closed for most of this year due to tensions in the region.
