Unknown assailants have killed three police officers in a gun attack in Russia's volatile North Caucasus republic of Daghestan.
Two of the victims died at the scene while the third later succumbed to his injuries.
Daghestani Interior Ministry officials say the incident took place in the republic's capital, Makhachkala, on September 3.
Russia's mostly Muslim-populated and ethnically mixed North Caucasus region has been plagued by violence for years.
After two unsuccessful separatist wars in Chechnya in the mid-1990s and early 2000s, the Islamic militancy spilled over into other North Caucasus republics, such as Daghestan, Ingushetia, and Kabardino-Balkaria.
