A police officer has been killed by gunmen in Russia's restive Republic of Daghestan in the North Caucasus.
Local law enforcement officials say the unknown assailants opened fire at a police car in Daghestan's Shamil District on August 5, killing the officer who was driving the vehicle.
Local authorities have put police on alert in nearby areas in an attempt to detain the attackers.
Daghestan and other republics in Russia's restive North Caucasus region have been plagued by violence linked to Islamic extremism and organized crime for years.
Scores of people have been killed or injured by the violence.
