European Council President Herman van Rompuy says Serbia has made enough progress in normalizing relations with Kosovo for the European Union to look at the possibility of opening accession talks with Belgrade.
Van Rompuy made the comments after meeting Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic in Brussels.
He said the EU will "review progress in the spring with a view to a possible decision to open accession negotiations."
Dacic said Belgrade will "continue our dialogue with Pristina, aiming toward achieving practical and sustainable solutions."
In EU-chaired talks on January 17, the EU said Dacic and his Kosovo counterpart, Hashim Thaci, agreed to another round of talks after making some progress on expanding a border agreement.
Belgrade does not recognize Kosovo's independence, which was declared unilaterally by Pristina in February 2008.
