Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has met U.S. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in Washington.
A White House statement says Obama and Biden congratulated Garibashvili February 24 for “completing the country’s first peaceful, democratic transition of power.”
Obama and Biden urged Garibashvili to continue working with all of Georgia’s political leaders and civil society to advance the rule of law and consolidate democratic progress.
They also thanked Georgia as a reliable partner in regional and global issues – including contributions to the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan.
Garibashvili is expected to meet later during his weeklong U.S. visit with Secretary of State John Kerry for talks on implementing a January 2009 strategic partnership charter.
Garibashvili’s is being accompanied on his visit by Georgia’s Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze, Economy Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Aleksi Petriashvili, and the head of the Georgian National Investment Agency Giorgi Pertaia.
