Budapest's liberal mayor, Gergely Karacsony, renamed streets after the Dalai Lama and other victims of alleged human rights abuses by China along streets surrounding the future site of a controversial new campus for a Chinese university. Another street was renamed "Uyghur Martyrs Road" after the mainly Muslim ethnic group that the West says has been victims of a Chinese genocide. A third was called "Free Hong Kong Road." Karacsony accuses the right-wing populist prime minister, Viktor Orban, of cozying up to China at the expense of the Hungarian taxpayers. He said the campus for China's Fudan University would cost Hungarian taxpayers nearly $2 billion and went against an earlier deal with the government to build dormitories and facilities for Hungarian students in the district.
