Officials Claim Bombing Plot Foiled In Ingushetia

Security forces in the troubled Russian North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia are claiming to have foiled a terrorist bombing plot.

Officials said an explosion hit a grocery shop in the town of Malgobek overnight, causing no casualties.

Officials said police who arrived to investigate found and disabled two other explosive devices that had been planted nearby.

Officials said the two other devices apparently were intended to go off after police and emergency responders arrived at the scene of the first blast.

Also on June 11, Ingush police reported the killing of two suspected militants in a shootout in the district of Sunzha.

Violence between suspected Islamic militants and security forces in Russia's North Caucasus, which includes Daghestan, Chechnya, and Ingushetia, leads to hundreds of deaths and injuries each year.

Based on reporting by Interfax and ITAR-TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
