Antigovernment Protest In Iran's Kurdistan

Footage has emerged of a protest on late January 4 in the city of Sanandaj in Iran's Kurdistan Province.

Western news agencies have reported an apparent lull in demonstrations.

But journalists and activists say protests have continued in cities and towns across Iran, with authorities' tight control over social media delaying the sharing of footage from the antigovernment rallies.

Antigovernment protests In Khuzestan

Social media footage purports to show a protest in the town of Dezful in Khuzestan Province, in southwest Iran, late January 4.

Overnight Antigovernment Protest In Tehran

Footage obtained by RFE/RL's Radio Farda showed a protest in Tehran late January 4. Protesters can be heard chanting "Death to [Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei."

The protest purportedly took place on Azadi street in Tehran.

Friday Prayers

Hard-line cleric Ahmad Khatami is scheduled to preside over Friday prayers at the Imam Khomeini Mosalla Mosque in Tehran shortly.

Khatami is a staunch critic of President Hassan Rohani and is expected to speak against the antigovernment protests.
