Security forces in Iraq are gaining ground against gunmen who seized part of the town of Sulaiman Bek and nearby villages in Salah al-Din Province on February 13.

AFP quoted Talib Muhammad, mayor of Sulaiman Bek, as saying troops killed at least 12 militants in operations on February 14.

Meanwhile, in Anbar Province, gunmen continue to hold the city of Fallujah and parts of the provincial capital, Ramadi.

RFE/RL's Radio Free Iraq reports that security forces shelled the hospital in Fallujah for the seventh straight day on February 13 in an effort to dislodge snipers.

The United Nations has expressed concern about the fate of civilians in Fallujah amid the fighting between government forces and militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

In Ramadi, several districts in the southern part of the city have come under aerial bombardment.
