The Islamic State (IS) extremist group has claimed responsibility for a shooting attack late December 29 that killed one person at a historic citadel in Russia's North Caucasus region of Daghestan.
The SITE intelligence group reported December 30 that IS claimed online it had launched the attack at the Naryn-Kala citadel in Derbent.
The attack also injured at least 10 more people.
The IS statement claimed the attack targeted a gathering of Russian intelligence officers.
Daghestan has become the epicenter of violence for militants seeking to establish an Islamic state in the North Caucasus.
Human rights groups say violence in the predominantly Muslim North Caucasus is fueled by a combination of religion along with anger at corruption and strong arm tactics by local leaders.
