Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbaev is being revealed as the central figure of the biggest painting in Kazakhstan, and according to the artist, the biggest in all the former Soviet region.
At 3.45 by 8.75 meters, the painting will be unveiled on the campus of the Kazakh Humanitarian Law University, a private school that belongs to Nazarbaev's longtime friend, Maksut Narikbaev. The two studied together in Ukraine in the 1950s.
According to the artist, the painting took nine months and nine days to finish. It depicts the opening of a new university building in 2008 in Astana. Accompanying Nazarbaev and Narikbaev is Astana Mayor Imangali Tasmagambetov. As they emerge from the building, a girl in a red national costume releases a white dove, the symbol of peace.
