Former Russian oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky has arrived in Israel for what's described as a brief private visit.

The trip was reported by the Israeli newspaper "Calcalist" and was confirmed to the Interfax news agency by Khodorkovsky’s spokeswoman Olga Pispanen.

The Israeli report said Khodorkovsky was expected to meet with his former Yukos oil company business partner, Leonid Nevzlin, an Israeli resident.

Nevzlin has twice been sentenced in absentia by Russian courts, including a life sentence in 2008 for alleged murder conspiracy.

Khodorkovsky served 10 years in prison in Russia on tax evasion and embezzlement charges before being released in December after being pardoned by President Vladimir Putin on humanitarian grounds.

Supporters say Khodorkovsky was the victim of a political prosecution.

Khodorkovsky flew to Berlin after his prison release and visited Switzerland earlier this week.
