BATKEN, Kyrgyzstan -- Kyrgyz President Roza Otunbaeva has visited the southern Batken region to familiarize herself with the situation on the country's borders with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Otunbaeva visited several villages in Batken's Leilek district on May 2 near the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, and will go to other border areas during her two-day visit.

Kyrgyzstan's borders with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have not been demarcated and many stretches, particularly in the Batken region, are disputed, giving rise to frequent cross-border incidents.

Kyrgyz Border Guard commander Zakir Tilenov told parliament on April 29 there had been eight incidents on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border and seven on the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border so far this year, many of them resulting in violence.
