Russian state energy giant Gazprom has taken over Kyrgyzstan's KyrgyzGaz natural-gas corporation.

Gazprom chief Aleksei Miller made the announcement to journalists after signing an agreement with the Kyrgyz government in Bishkek on April 10.

Calling the deal "historic," Miller said Gazprom had bought 100 percent of KyrgyzGaz's shares from Kyrgyzstan.

Miller added that KyrgyzGaz's new name would be Gazprom-Kyrgyzstan.
