Reports: Kyrgyz Villagers Beat Up Prosecutor, Judge

Kyrgyz media are reporting that at least 100 villagers in the southern Ala-Buka district beat up a district judge and prosecutor on September 25.

The villagers were protesting a decision by the authorities to exonerate a local ethnic Uzbek accused of severely beating a fellow villager – a Kyrgyz man.

The villagers claim the Uzbek man bribed the prosecutor and has been walking free despite being put under house arrest.

Both the judge and prosecutor were hospitalized.

Police said the situation in Ala-Buka is stable and that those responsible for beating the judge and prosecutor will be brought to justice.

Southern Kyrgyzstan was the scene of bloody ethnic violence in June 2010 that killed hundreds of people – mostly ethnic Uzbeks – and forced some 400,000 leave their homes temporarily.
