Kyrgyz Police Arrest Three In Kazakh Tourist Killing


BISHKEK -- Police in Kyrgyzstan have arrested three men suspected of robbing and fatally beating a Kazakh tourist, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Interior Ministry spokesman Bakyt Seyitov told RFE/RL today that one of the suspects is a 17-year-old resident of Bishkek. The other two, both aged 20, are from the village of Kara-Oy near Lake Issyk-Kul in northern Kyrgyzstan.

Seyitov said the suspects are currently being held at Bishkek's main detention center. They face charges of robbery with assault and assault with a fatal outcome.

Investigators reportedly found the suspects in possession of a watch and a bag belonging to the victim.

Erlan Balmakhaev, 32, was robbed and severely beaten near a resort at Lake Issyk-Kul on August 7. He fell into a coma after being hospitalized and died in a clinic in Bishkek on August 14.

President Roza Otunbaeva had ordered Interior Minister Zarylbek Rysaliev to put the investigation of the case under his personal control.
