BISHKEK -- About 20 Kyrgyz human rights activists have picketed the Belarusian Embassy in Bishkek to protest Belarusian police violence and the arrests of opposition activists after the presidential election on December 19, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

The Kyrgyz protesters handed a petition to embassy officials calling for the immediate release of all Belarusian activists detained by the police.

Hundreds of opposition activists and seven opposition presidential candidates were detained in Minsk on December 19 as police cracked down on a mass protest rally against official results that said President Alyaksandr Lukashenka had been reelected with almost 80 percent of the vote.

Tolekan Ismailova, who chairs the Citizens Against Corruption human rights center, told RFE/RL that the picket in Bishkek would continue on December 21.
