-- Self-appointed leaders of the Ukrainian separatist region of Donetsk appealed to Russia to consider absorbing it to "restore historic justice" and to send in troops.

-- Pro-Russian separatists in the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk said they would not allow voting for the May 25 presidential election to be conducted.

The mayor of Ukraine's eastern city of Kharkiv has reportedly been shot and is in serious condition.

An unknown attacker shot Hennadiy Kernes in the back around midday on April 28, according to his press service.

Kernes, 54, is currently undergoing surgery in a Kharkiv hospital.

His press service said that "doctors are fighting for his life."

No more details are available.

Kharkiv is Ukraine's second-largest city.

Pro-Russian separatist protesters seized government buildings in Kharkiv and other eastern cities and towns earlier this month.
