A Moscow court has issued an arrest warrant in absentia for the former American-born employer of deceased Russian whistle-blower Sergei Magnitsky.
William Browder, a British millionaire and CEO of Hermitage Capital trust fund, is accused of illegally acquiring $70 million worth of stock in Russian energy giant Gazprom.
Browder has said the charges against him are politically motivated.
Browder and his lawyer Magnitsky are both accused by Russian authorities of tax evasion.
Magnitsky died in a Russian jail in 2009 after uncovering a massive fraud scheme that implicated officials.
The case has caused tensions between Moscow and Washington.
On April 12, the U.S. imposed visa bans and asset freezes on 18 individuals, mainly Russian officials implicated in Magnitsky's death.
Russia has responded with visa bans against 18 U.S. citizens.
