The new head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation (OSCE) mission to Moldova has arrived in Chisinau to begin his term.
U.S. Ambassador Michael Scanlan took up his post on August 1, replacing former mission head, Jennifer Brush, who left last month.
Scanlan issued a statement saying he is "confident we can continue working towards a settlement" of the conflict between Chisinau and the breakaway region of Transdniester "despite recent worrying developments."
Scanlan will participate in the next round of OSCE-mediated talks in the so-called 5+2 format, scheduled to be held in Vienna in September.
Scanlan has spent 23 years in the U.S. State Department, most recently as director for Eastern European affairs and charge d'affaires in Minsk.
