Pakistani authorities said the death toll from flooding caused by days of monsoon rains has climbed past 45, and was expected to go higher.
Ahmed Nasar, head of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority of Balochistan, said July 7 that hundreds of houses had been damaged and thousands of animals had also perished in the heavy rains, which began lashing the region three days earlier.
Sherry Rehman, the government minister for climate change, said in the first week of July the entire country had experienced nearly double the average rainfall recorded over the past 30 years.
Separately, rescuers recovered the bodies of seven coalminers in southern Sindh Province. The miners were trapped after floodwater spilled into their coal mine on July 5.
Torrential rains were forecast to continue in various parts of the country for several more days.
