At least 16 people have been killed and many more injured in a massive fire on August 27 at a chemical factory in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi.
It was not immediately clear what caused the fire in the congested Mehran Town neighborhood. TV footage showed firefighters dousing the flames, as ambulances continued transporting victims to hospitals.
Murtaza Wahab, a spokesman for the provincial government, told reporters that police had launched a probe into the blaze and would be looking into whether the owner had installed fire extinguishing equipment at the site.
Karachi is the capital of Sindh Province, where many people have set up factories in residential areas in violation of building codes.
