Interior Ministry officials in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in Russia's volatile North Caucasus say a police colonel was killed by an unknown assailant.
Anatoly Bukin was shot on January 28 when entering his apartment block.
The assailant escaped the scene.
Bukin, 36, was hospitalized with a gunshot wound in his head, and died in hospital several hours later.
Local law enforcement officers have launched investigations into the incident.
