Reelected Turkmen President Vows Reforms

Turkmenistan’s authoritarian leader Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, who was reelected on February 12 with 97 percent of the vote, has vowed to lay the foundations for a multiparty system and free media.

Speaking at the cabinet’s session on February 16, Berdymukhammedov said he would use his new five-year term to enhance prosperity.

In the election on February 12, Berdymukhammedov faced several nominal opponents who all praised government policies and voted for Berdymukhammedov.

Berdymukhammedov, who has been ruling Turkmenistan since 2006 after the death of his predecessor Saparmurat Niyazov, has promised reforms in the past, but those promises went largely unmet,
