The mayor of the southern Russian city of Astrakhan has been remanded into custody on charges of bribe-taking.

Moscow's Basman District Court on November 15 ordered Mikhail Stolyarov to be held in pretrial detention until January 13, 2014, while investigations against him are being conducted.

Stolyarov was arrested on November 13 in Astrakhan while allegedly accepting a bribe of 10 million rubles ($305,500) from a local businessman. He was transferred to Moscow that day.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said at his residence in Novo-Ogarevo on November 14 that he was aware of the Stolyarov case, which he said would have a lot of "resonance" in Russia.

Based on reporting by Interfax, ITAR-TASS, and RIA Novosti

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
