Russia Charges Nine Suspected Members Of Terror Group

Russian authorities have charged nine suspected members of a banned Islamic group with illegal possession of explosives and ammunition.

Russia's Interior Ministry said that the nine suspects were detained earlier this month.

They are suspected of being active members of Hizb ut-Tahrir, an organization officially banned in Russia as a terrorist group.

The nine are also charged with coordinating the operations of a banned extremist group.

The arrested suspects are citizens of Russia and Tajikistan.

Investigators say five suspects are leaders of Hizb ut-Tahrir's units in Moscow and other Russian regions.

Based on reporting by RIA Novosti, ITAR-TASS, and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
