MOSCOW -- Moscow police have detained seven protesters who were demanding help against organized criminals in their village, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
The protesters demanded the Interior Ministry take action against a large criminal group in the village of Korostino in the southwestern Volgograd Oblast.
Those detained were taken to a police station and told that their action was unsanctioned and therefore illegal.
The demonstrators say they traveled a long distance to reach Moscow in the hope of persuading federal police to prosecute the criminal group in Korostino that they say is similar to one in the town of Kushchevskaya in the southern Krasnodar Krai.
Russians were shocked by the brutal killing of 12 people, including several children, in Kushchevskaya last month. An investigation revealed that the town was controlled by an organized criminal group.
