Protest In Russian Far East Against Price Hikes

VLADIVOSTOK -- Dozens of people protested today in the Far Eastern Russian city of Vladivostok against rising prices for foodstuffs and utilities, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The protesters held placards saying such things as "Government, step down!" and "Minimum salaries for deputies and officials!"

The Primorye Krai is the only region in the Far East in which the Russian government decided not to raise minimum salaries this year. The minimum monthly salary in the region remains 5,500 rubles ($135) -- the same as last year.

Meanwhile, in neighboring regions the minimal monthly salary was increased to 7,000 rubles ($172) as of January 1.
