Cross-border shelling between India and Pakistan has left at least 15 dead and 35 wounded.
The exchange of fire along the heavily militarized frontier in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir was one of this year's deadliest.
Control of Kashmir is split between the two countries and the territory as a whole is claimed by each.
Indian officials said the incident began after Indian troops foiled an infiltration attempt, and that six of its civilians, three soldiers, and a border guard were killed.
Pakistan's military said it had responded to indiscriminate firing by the Indian military on the night of November 12-13, and officials and the military said that four Pakistani civilians and a soldier were killed on its side, along with tens wounded.
More than 40 civilians have been killed in firing between Indian and Pakistani troops this year.
