DUSHANBE -- Three men have been detained in northern Tajikistan in possession of what police say was more than 31 kilograms of heroin, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.
Tajik Agency for Drugs Control (AKN) officials told RFE/RL on August 8 that the three suspects, a Kyrgyz, a Russian, and a Tajik, were detained in the northern Sughd Province last week.
The AKN officials said the men planned to smuggle the heroin into Russia.
The detained Kyrgyz citizen is from Kyrgyzstan's southern region of Osh, the Russian is from Tomsk in western Siberia, and the Tajik is from the Bobojon Gafur district in Sughd.
Drug agency officials said the three met in Moscow earlier this year to plan the illegal trafficking operation.
Officials also told RFE/RL that 57 members of 26 criminal groups involved in illegal drug trafficking have been apprehended in Tajikistan during the first six months of this year.
Over that period, 2,751 kilograms of illegal drugs have been confiscated, which is almost 35 percent more than during the first six months of 2010.
