Pakistani Military Kills Taliban Suspects

Pakistani security forces acting on intelligence raided a former insurgent stronghold in the country’s northwest and killed two Taliban militants, including one suspected of involvement in an October attack that killed six soldiers, the military said in a statement on January 18.

The military said a third suspect was arrested in the raid which took place in the South Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

The Pakistani Taliban is a separate militant group from the Afghan Taliban, although Pakistan’s militant groups are often interlinked with those across the border.

Militants have in recent months stepped up attacks on troops in Pakistan's former tribal regions bordering Afghanistan.

In 2014, the army launched a large-scale operation to eradicate militant bases in the region and curb a near decade-long insurgency that claimed thousands of lives.

In 2016, the army claimed to have cleared the last militant stronghold there after a three-month operation.
