Tatarstan's State Council has approved the Russian republic’s former interior minister, who was ousted in connection with a police abuse scandal, to be a deputy prime minister.
Asgat Safarov, 50, led Tatarstan’s Interior Ministry for 14 years before resigning from the post in the wake of a high-profile scandal at a police station in the Tatar capital, Kazan, in March.
In that case, a suspect who had been in police custody died after police allegedly beat and raped him with a bottle.
Safarov's nomination to deputy prime minister, approved on May 28, was put forward by Tatar President Rustam Minnikhanov earlier in May.
Tatar Prime Minister Ildar Khalikov told State Council deputies that Safarov’s duties will include supervision of security issues.
