A 1981 Czechoslovak news report shows politicians and cheering crowds welcoming Afghanistan's communist president, Babrak Karmal, during his visit to Prague and Bratislava. Karmal, a former ambassador to Czechoslovakia, had been installed as Afghan president with Soviet support -- but only after spending nearly a year in hiding in the central European country, fearing for his life amid factional fighting back home.
