LVIV, Ukraine -- A traffic accident in western Ukraine has resulted in a spill of a highly toxic fluid, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.
Lviv Oblast Council Deputy Iryna Sekh told RFE/RL that a truck with several barrels of the toxic chemical mononitrochlorbenzol (MNCB) hit a pole in the village of Didyliv and overturned late on October 13.
One of the barrels burst open. The driver died at the scene.
Sekh said local authorities are considering evacuating the village because MNCB is toxic and may pose a health hazard.
But representatives of the Lviv Oblast's Emergency Situations Department told RFE/RL that the situation is under control and there is no need for an evacuation.
The truckload of MNCB was headed for Poland. Local authorities say the customs service has taken charge of delivering the remaining barrels.
