Turkey Extradites Kazakh Wanted For Terrorism

Turkish authorities have arrested and extradited a Kazakh national wanted by Astana for his alleged involvement in terrorist acts.

The prosecutor's office in western Atyrau Oblast said on June 21 that the suspect was brought to Kazakhstan on June 19.

He was wanted in connection with two explosions in Atyrau in October 2011. A suicide bomber was killed in one of the blasts.

Last year, 47 people from Atyrau were sentenced to lengthy jail terms after being found guilty of involvement in the bombings.

A group called Jund al-Khilafah (Soldiers of the Caliphate), which is made up of Islamist militants based on the Afghan-Pakistani border, claimed credit for the bombings in an Internet statement.

In December 2012, Kazakhstan's National Security Committee said the group posed a threat to the country's security.

Based on reporting by KazTAG and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
