Kosovo’s goal of becoming a full member of the Union of European Football Associations has taken a step forward, with UEFA’s executive committee agreeing that Kosovo’s formal application for membership will be on the agenda the next UEFA Congress.
If the application is accepted when European soccer’s governing body holds its annual congress in Budapest in March 2016, Kosovo would become the 55th member of UEFA.
UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino confirmed Kosovo's membership would be on the agenda in Budapest on September 18 after an executive committee meeting ended in Malta.
Full membership in UEFA would also make Kosovo eligible to become a full member of FIFA when the world governing body of soccer holds its annual congress in Mexico City in May 2016.
Serbia has sought through the courts to prevent Kosovo's membership of many international organizations, including FIFA, since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008.
