Ukraine's government has selected an international consortium led by ExxonMobil and Shell to develop the Skifska natural-gas field in Ukraine's sector of the Black Sea.
The Ukrainian president's website posted an announcement on September 26 saying Energy Minister Eduard Stavytskyy had signed the deal with representatives of the consortium, which also includes Ukraine's Nadra Ukrayiny and Romania's Petrom, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Stavytskyy said that, once developed, the Skifska field should produce some 8 billion to 10 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
The field is located in the northwest part of the Black Sea near the border with Romania.
Ukraine has been moving to lessen its dependence on Russia for gas supplies.
Shell signed a deal earlier this month to develop Ukraine's Yuzovska field in the Donetsk region.
