UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on the government of Iraq to halt executions.

Ban said in a report that he was "concerned by the continued and increased implementation of the death penalty."

Ban's report claimed between January and November 2011 there were 68 people executed, but during the period from December 2011 to February 2012, there were 80 people executed in Iraq.

The report said most of those executed were sentenced for violating antiterrorism laws.

"I therefore...urge the Iraqi authorities to establish a moratorium on the use of the death penalty," Ban said.
