Following the Russian-brokered truce signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan late on November 9, Moscow is sending troops to monitor the peace. This is not the first time Russian peacekeepers have been deployed to the former Soviet space, with often very different outcomes.
In 1992, Russian troops were included in multinational forces to keep the peace in the breakaway regions of Georgia (South Ossetia) and Moldova (Transdniester) in ad hoc agreements to stop fighting. In 1994, they joined another peacekeeping force in Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia region, to stop fighting and ethnic cleansing, with only limited success.
Russian troops are still stationed in all of these breakaway regions in 2020.
