On July 31, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is due to announce the city that will host the Winter Olympic Games in 2022. Either Almaty or Beijing will be chosen. Almaty has already started its preparations for the 2017 Winter Universiade.
Currently two ice stadiums and a students' village are being built in the city. If the IOC chooses Almaty to host the games, Kazakhstan plans to use the Universiade stadiums and the village, as well as sports complexes built for the 2011 Asian Games, for events at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
