A member of the Russian presidential Human Rights Council has been attacked in the southwestern city of Voronezh.

Andrei Yurov said two masked men approached him late in the afternoon on July 1 in Voronezh, hit him several times, and splashed the indelible green antiseptic known as "zelyonka" on his face.

Yurov, who did not require hospitalization, sustained a leg injury and chemical burns in his eyes. Doctors said his injuries were not serious.

Yurov said he did not know who attacked him or why.

Yurov is well known for his human rights activities.

He is an expert at the Moscow Helsinki Group and leads the Youth Human Rights Defenders' Movement Foundation.
