Baghdad, 31 January 2004 (RFE/RL) -- Three U.S. soldiers were killed today by an explosion near the Iraqi city of Kirkuk, shortly after a car bomb exploded outside a police station in Mosul.
A U.S. military spokesman says the troops were killed when an "improvised explosive device" struck their vehicle between Kirkuk and Tikrit, the hometown of ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
Several hours earlier, there were reports that a car bomb exploded outside a police station in the northern city of Mosul, some 360 kilometers northwest of Baghdad. Details of the blast were not immediately available, but news agencies are reporting there were casualties.
