Doha, Qatar; 13 February 2004 (RFE/RL) -- Police and doctors in Qatar say former Chechen President Zelimkhan Yandarbiev has died from injuries he sustained earlier today in an explosion in or near his car.
Yandarbiev died in hospital in the Qatari capital Doha, where he was brought for emergency surgery following the blast.
Arabic satellite television Al-Jazeera reported earlier that two people who were travelling with Yandarbiev were also killed in the blast.
Yandarbiev, Chechnya's acting president in 1996 and 1997, was wanted by Russia on charges of leading an armed revolt. He lived in exile in Qatar. The United Nations last year put Yandarbiev on a list of people with alleged links to the Al-Qaeda terrorist network.
